Supply-chain resilience has become an important consideration for pharmaceutical manufacturers. When critical APIs, key starting materials, or drug intermediates depend on external sources, disruptions can create uncertainty across the pharmaceutical supply chain.

India’s efforts to strengthen domestic bulk drug manufacturing are intended to address part of this challenge. But establishing domestic capacity is only one part of the equation. Manufacturers also need process equipment that supports dependable operations, appropriate product quality, and long-term production continuity.

India’s API Manufacturing Push: Why It Matters

Government support for domestic API manufacturing has progressed beyond policy announcements into project implementation.

As of June 2026, the Department of Pharmaceuticals reported ₹5,210.74 crore in investment under the Bulk Drugs PLI scheme, with 39 projects covering 28 APIs and KSMs commissioned. Three Bulk Drug Parks have also been approved in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh to develop common infrastructure for manufacturers.

These initiatives are intended to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports for selected critical pharmaceutical ingredients.

For companies establishing or expanding API production, the practical challenge is converting this wider manufacturing ambition into facilities that can operate consistently under their specific process conditions.

Why Equipment Reliability Matters for Supply-Chain Resilience

Domestic manufacturing capacity is valuable only when production facilities can perform their intended role reliably.

A reactor unavailable because of a mechanical issue, a filtration system that cannot meet process requirements, or a dryer that struggles with a product’s characteristics can affect the wider production schedule.

This is why equipment selection should account for more than rated capacity or purchase price.

Manufacturers should evaluate equipment suitability, operating conditions, maintenance access, component availability, material compatibility, and the support available throughout its service life.

Reliability is not created by a single machine. It depends on appropriate equipment selection, good engineering, operating discipline, and effective maintenance.

Three Equipment Priorities for API Manufacturers

1. Process Compatibility from the Start

API processes can involve corrosive chemicals, solvents, elevated temperatures, pressure, and demanding separation or drying requirements.

Reactors, pressure vessels, filters, and dryers must be specified according to the actual process. Materials of construction should be selected with chemical compatibility, mechanical requirements, operating conditions, and cleaning procedures in mind.

Where suitable, corrosion-resistant alloys or fluoropolymer-coated and lined contact surfaces can help address challenging chemical environments.

The key is to identify these requirements before equipment is fabricated or installed.

2. Reliable Separation and Drying

Filtration and drying can influence product recovery, process duration, and the transition between manufacturing stages.

Different products require different approaches. A Pressure Nutsche Filter, Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryer, Sparkler Filter, centrifuge, or candle filter cannot be selected on name alone. Likewise, Vacuum Tray Dryers, Rotary Cone Vacuum Dryers, and other drying technologies serve different material and process requirements.

Manufacturers should consider the complete sequence—from the condition of the incoming material to the requirements of the next operation—when evaluating equipment.

3. Maintenance and Asset-Life Planning

Equipment reliability also depends on what happens after commissioning.

Inspection, preventive maintenance, access to spares, repairs, refurbishment, and appropriate recoating or relining can influence the usable life of an asset.

When existing equipment remains structurally sound and suitable for its process, refurbishment or surface restoration may be worth evaluating against replacement. Such decisions should be based on equipment condition, engineering assessment, process requirements, and lifecycle economics.

This is particularly important when unplanned downtime can affect production commitments.

Why Corrosion Protection Is Part of the Reliability Strategy

Equipment exposed to aggressive chemicals may require additional protection beyond the underlying metal.

Fluoropolymer coating and lining solutions can be appropriate for certain applications, depending on the chemical environment and equipment design. PTFE, PFA, ETFE, PVDF, and Halar® (ECTFE) have different performance characteristics and should not be treated as interchangeable.

A suitable protection strategy considers chemical concentration, temperature, mechanical conditions, substrate, application method, and inspection requirements.

The aim is to reduce avoidable deterioration while maintaining equipment suitability for the intended process.

How Should Manufacturers Evaluate Equipment Partners?

As API production expands, equipment buyers should consider whether a supplier can address the process requirements as well as the equipment itself.

Useful evaluation questions include:

A partner with capabilities across equipment fabrication, process equipment, and specialized surface protection can help manufacturers evaluate related requirements together.

ADVETPL’s portfolio includes reactors and pressure vessels, filtration and drying equipment, fluoropolymer coating and lining, and maintenance services such as repair, recoating, and relining. These capabilities are relevant to manufacturers evaluating both new installations and existing equipment.

From Domestic Capacity to Dependable Production

Strengthening India’s API manufacturing ecosystem requires more than reducing reliance on external suppliers. It also requires process infrastructure that can support consistent production, effective maintenance, and appropriate protection against demanding operating conditions.

Equipment decisions made today can influence operating costs, maintenance needs, and production continuity over many years.

Domestic manufacturing resilience is built not only by increasing capacity, but by ensuring that the equipment behind that capacity is correctly selected, maintained, and supported throughout its working life.
